You’re just doing your job and I’m just doing mine. Now if your life is your business, that means you have a job to do. Just like a business, there are a lot of moving parts and tasks to accomplish i.e. there are many jobs that need to be done. Many times, there are two jobs that conflict with each other when dealing with other people/businesses. You want to improve your building, but the city wants to keep everyone in line with their code. Conflict. Maybe you need a delivery or dropped off but the cops say you can’t do it here. There is no parking but you only need to run in and out and will only be there for five (5) minutes, however, the parking meter maid wants to ticket you. Conflict. The tow driver wants your car and…you don’t want them to have it. Conflict. It goes on and on. One’s business will naturally conflict with others. Gazelles want to graze and lions want to eat. Conflict. It’s a part of life. You got a job and so do I. It reminds me of a quote:
“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”
― Christopher McDougall, Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen
If you’re a gazelle, don’t take it personally when the lion tries to eat you, it’s just business. It’s your job to make sure you don’t get eaten. You got job and so do I. The proverbial saying is notorious with iniquitous moments. Let’s look at some of these episodes many of us can empathize with.
TSA Security Line
If you feel something isn’t right or you’re uncomfortable, it’s your job to stop and correct the behavior. Will this inconvenience you? Probably, but you’re the boss and that means you have a responsibility to correct the problem. Could you miss your flight? Yes. But if you had your shit together, you would be there earlier enough to handle that. And you’ll also be boss to follow through and bring down the hammer on the T.S.A. worker(s) who over crossed the line. From my experience, people who are calm are scary as hell. And people with power rarely threaten others, they only act. In instances when they may threaten someone, it’s done calmly with the knowledge they hold that they know they can back up, to discourage their current adversary’s potential actions. But in the end, they have a job and so do you. Your job will be to turn them into a poster child.
Dealing with Cops
When dealing with cops, they have a job, and so you do: to keep them in line. Cops have fine line to walk, but I didn’t tell them to walk it, so it’s my job to let them know when they are or have crossed the line. Christopher Dorner is an extreme epitome of this. He had a job to do which he felt was needed and the brotherhood had their job. Conflict.
Your Politicians Getting Anything Done
You don’t like what politicians are(n’t) doing? Create your own program to make it happen. If you still believe politicians have your best interest at heart, you may be insane. I’m not saying that all of them are bad, but there doesn’t seem to be enough good ones to make much needed positive change. However, as a boss, you don’t look to others to handle your business, you get it done. You form a team or delegate the task to someone who will get it done and that doesn’t seem to be politicians. That’s bad business. Nonetheless, politicians have job and I would not assume what that is. Just look at their actions and the outcome and use that determine what’s going on. From my observation I’ve gathered that they’re not working for me.
Harassing Debt Collector
Debt collectors will call like they’re about to go out of business if they don’t get your money. It’s your job to stop the harassment and lay down the law. You use the TCPA, FDCPA and FCRA to smash them! We’re going dive deep into that subject in future post. Still, it is your job to defend your business and stop anything that interferes with your plans whatever they may be.
Defamation of Culture
I was on Alfred Adask’s website and he made some asinine comment that I had to correct:
Combine the high abortion rate along with high crime rate, high drug rate, high prostitution and homosexuality rate, high school drop-out rate in the African-American community, and we can see evidence of a people so deep into self-destruction that “African-Americans” as a discernible group could cease to exist before the end of this century.
It was not that his comment was “wrong”, as it was an opinion, but for the purposes of damage control I had to curtail the potential rippling effects of such sentiment. While most Caucasians don’t “get it” when it comes to the “Black experience,” I make it my job to preserve the image of my culture that others will so thoughtlessly corrupt when we [“Black” people] have a hard enough time keeping a positive regard. Why, because it’s my business! If it’s not my business, I made it mine! You can read the discourse in it’s entirety when you have the time if you wish.
Encounters with the “Justice System”
Lawyers have a job:
“Their [the attorney’s] first duty is to the court, not to the client, and wherever the duties he owes to the client conflict with the duties he owes to the court, as an officer of the court in the administration of justice, the former must yield to the latter”. Corpus Juris Secundum, Attorney & Client, Sec. 4, pg 802.
That’s pretty clear to me. This doesn’t mean we can use a lawyer, but we must control them like a boss when it serves as a better strategy to do so.
When they are on the opposite side of the battle field, you get to handle business. It’s not time to act differently. You get a plan, form a team if needed, organize your paperwork and argument, or deal with them and court in whichever manner works best for you. Either way, they have a job to do and so do I.
O.K. one last example. One that is overlooked often because it’s not looked at like a business. Your health is serious business. You’ve got to get down to bottom of things. While you do want a good relationship with your doctor, you better ask questions about everything. Trust has nothing to do with it. If he takes it personal, then you need a new doctor. It’s your body in the end. I need to know what’s in this thing, what that does, what’s happening, etc. I’m going to be educated and informed as he or she works. If the doctor get’s annoyed, oh well, it’s just business.
With all that said, the goal is not to take anything personal, it’s all business. If your boyfriend/girlfriend leaves you, it’s their business. The relationship was not profitable. Just business. Cops talk to you, it’s your business to job to question them. I need ID and to know why, what, who, where, when, and every other question necessary. If you have never read or listen to The Four Agreements, I suggest you grab it here. It’s good stuff. It’s all business folks! Adopt the notion, it will greatly improve your general disposition.
